- The
specimen from the fracture face must be carefully cut, mounted, ground, and
polished to reveal the fracture origin.
- Care
must be taken when cutting a specimen that was removed from the fracture
origin. For example, cuts may be made with a diamond-tipped cutoff wheel.
- Cuts
should be made so that the fracture origin is at one edge of a specimen.
The
second cut that is made should be approximately 1/16″ from the fracture origin.
The second cut is mounted facing upward.
- The
mount is then ground and polished using standard procedures.
- The
proper amount of grinding brings the fracture origin to the surface of the
mount.
- However,
excessive grinding to the mount causes the origin to be lost.
